5 Ways to Stay Healthy and Happy During Lockdown

Make the most of your time at home with these 5 strategies for staying healthy and happy during lockdown.
It’s funny how quickly life can change. One minute you’re organising a downhill mountain biking trip with mates or arranging an all-girls ski trip. The next minute you’re standing in a shopping centre aisle wondering where the hell all the 4-ply has gone.
This sudden shift can throw your life into disarray and make quick work of your well-established routine. The lack of precedent only serves to make staying on track all the more difficult.
The good news is that we’re all in this together. However, looking after yourself and those closest to you should be a priority. With that in mind, here are 5 easy ways to stay healthy and happy during quarantine.
1. Keep in regular contact with friends and family
Human beings are social creatures. We need regular contact with not just our immediate family unit but also our closest confidants and our broader circle of friends.
This doesn’t mean firing texts back and forth or relying on instant messages to bridge the divide. For social connectedness to be effective, you need to try and recreate those face-to-face interactions.
Scheduling Facetime hangs with your mates or attempting to host a virtual dinner party via apps such as Zoom will help you feel a little more connected.
They won’t replace the real thing mind you, but in this situation it’s about doing the best you can with what you have, and compared to generations before us, we’ve got a lot of technology at our fingertips to make socialising from a distance super easy.
2. Establish a routine
Right now your daily routine is probably out of whack and that’s ok.
You will need to establish some semblance of a routine though if you want to maintain your sanity.
This means not giving into the temptation of kicking it on the couch to binge watch Netflix throughout the day. There’s plenty of time for that at night and on weekends.
Try instead to create a plan that imitates whatever a standard day would usually look like for you and your family.
Set an alarm in the morning, get up to workout if that’s what you usually do and check any emails in your home office or at a makeshift desk, rather than while seated at the breakfast table.
There’s so much going on right now that you can’t control. What you can control is how you organise your day.
It will no doubt look different depending on your living situation, but establishing a routine will certainly help you feel more grounded.
3. Arrange an adventure sports movie night
Just like you we yearn for the moment when we can go outside and take our favourite Quipmo hire equipment for a spin. For now though, we need to get creative in order to get our fix.
This means switching the outdoors for the TV, laptop or tablet and scheduling an adventure sports film night.
Queue up a couple of online surfing edits. Rewatch your favourite snowboarding movie. Check out a sport that you have never seen before.

4. Don’t neglect physical exercise
You shouldn’t put a line through trying to stay fit, just because you can’t go to the gym or run a few laps around the neighbourhood.
As long as you have enough room to roll out a yoga mat or space to lift some iron in the garage, staying fit is totally possible.
After all, exercise is as good for the body as it is for the mind. Even a short circuit of pushups, situps, burpees and starjumps will have a positive effect on your mental state.
Not having a workout routine is no excuse either. There are youtube videos, apps with trial periods and fitness trainers that offer free programs if you simply sign up for their newsletter.
Once you have a routine handy, it’s just a matter of sticking to it while you’re in lockdown. Our advice is to begin with a small 10-minute workout in the morning then build from there.
If you start losing motivation though, just remember that this guy ran a marathon on his 7-metre balcony. The least you can do is a few simple exercises in your living room.
5. Lay off social media every once and awhile
Staying connected via social media is great, but there’s such a thing as information overload.
If you lean into Instagram or Facebook to the point where it consumes any spare time you may have, you will end up feeling overwhelmed with negativity (bad news gets more press than good news after all).
Totally unplugging from social media isn’t the answer. Instead, you should schedule time for it throughout the day.
Feel free to unfollow any individuals or pages that appear to sensationalise the news as well.
The last thing you need is to feel confused or anxious while you’re trying to stay positive.
